Local steelmaker’s event raises more than $22,000 for local student programs
Davenport, Iowa – Steel manufacturer SSAB hosted its 15th annual Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon on Saturday, March 3 at Big River Bowling in Davenport, taking over all 48 lanes of the bowling alley for an afternoon of fun and fundraising to support Junior Achievement (JA) of the Heartland. This year’s event raised more than $22,000 for JA of the Heartland, which provides hands-on elementary and secondary programs focused on work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship for nearly 60,000 students in and around the Quad Cities.
More than 200 SSAB Iowa employees, vendors, friends and families participated in the Bowl-A-Thon, which took place from 1 to 4 p.m. Funds for the event are raised primarily through sponsors, as well as employee donations.
“SSAB Iowa has a long history of supporting JA of the Heartland and we have embraced the organization’s mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy,” said Andy Bramstedt, general manager of SSAB’s steel mill in Montpelier, Iowa. “Like Junior Achievement, SSAB is committed to fostering the success of youth in our communities."
With annual donations of around $20,000 plus money raised from the annual Bowl-A-Thon events, SSAB has contributed more than half a million dollars to JA over the last 15 years. In addition, dozens of SSAB volunteers have dedicated their time to classroom training and other JA events to help teach Iowa children real-world business and financial skills.
“We are extremely thankful for the tremendous financial and volunteer support we’ve received from SSAB over the years,” said Dougal Nelson, vice president of development for Junior Achievement of the Heartland. “They are a fantastic partner for us in achieving our goal to empower young people to own their economic success.”
